Genetic Algorithm for Cost Optimization of Different Multi-Tunnel Greenhouse Design Alternatives

Greenhouses are employed worldwide to protect crops from meteorological conditions as well control some plant production variables. As multi-tunnel structures amongst the most used, in this article, we focus on cost optimization of both steel structure and concrete foundation greenhouse typology. Firstly, three structural alternatives composed tunnels differentiated portal frames were dimensioned conforming European design structures, namely, Eurocode 3; meanwhile, was calculated through a previously validated matrix method. Then, genetic algorithms optimize for each proposed evaluate relative weight element overall consumption. Moreover, influence final also assessed, it found that cost-effective solution corresponded optimized alternative exhibiting 3.5 m separation between combination profile plastic gutter (i.e., M3OPT at 15.14 €/m2).
